Zdrowie psychiczne a dyskurs medialny w Polsce
Streszczenie
Mental disorders constitutes a serious social issue, which requires undertaking actions not only in the area of therapeutic means, but also mental health promotion. Due to invariable negative attitudes of a vast group of Poles towards mentally ill people and the fact, that for many of them media is the only source of knowledge about this problem, a further research on image of mental illness in media is necessary. This article addresses the issue of metaphorical usage of terms referring to mental health in Polish media discourse. To analyze the fragment of the discourse a triangulated scheme of discursive manipulation by T. A. van Dijk was applied. The research revealed, that most of the terms referring to mental disorders were used by the authors instrumentally. Such a practice of symbolic elites was evaluated as an abuse, which can result in numerous negative social consequences, i.e. reproducing false images of mental illness, maintaining stereotypes, exclusion and discrimination of mentally disordered individuals. From the results of the research, recommendations, which can be used in the field of promotion of mental health, have been derived.
