The paper deals with non-technological aspects of changes in the content
of work in the conditions of growing automation.
Basing on the empirical research and studies of literature on changes in
the content of work of machine tool operators (conventional, Numerical Control
- NC, and Computer Numerical - CNC) the author claims a growth of importance
of non-technological factors of the situation of work in the formation
of the structure of the content of work (the degree of complexity of
action, the extent of autonomy, the level of required qualification etc.) Of
special significance is the expansion of the range of organizational freedom
brought about by the growing mechanization and automation.
The research results are contrary to the theories of "technologistic" determinism
of the content of work and refer to the modern theoretical and empirical
orientation in the sociology of technology.

The paper presents an analysis of the state of enforcement of the principle
of self-financing of companies (one of the 3 basic principles of the economic
reform in Poland) and of its connection with the undertaking initiative of industrial
companies. The analysis was made on the basis of materials published in
4 periodicals over the period of 3 years: 1982-1984. By "entrepreneurship is meant
an undertaking initiative in the sphere of economy, mainly in the field of
production, with the prospect of profit and of non-routine (and thereby risky)
character.
The state of enforcement of the reform legislation in the field of self-financing is far from satisfactory. Among the most popular practices is the
so called "soft financing" expressed mainly in subsidizing and conceding tax
(and other) exemptions without objective justification. This has certain negative
effects in the sphere of economic behavior of companies, especially
with regard to their entrepreneurship.
Most generally, instead of undertaking profitable initiatives which could
establish their position on the market the companies concentrate their efforts
on the "game" with agencies of the Government in view of gaining profits without
carrying out their proper activity.
Thus make-believe entrepreneurship supersedes real initiative.

The study was aimed at finding out, in an empirical way, if it is possible
to isolate in the behavior of managers of research and designing teams a behavioral-cognitive syndrome called the subjective approach to subordinates, and
what are the consequences of its presence for the functioning of the teams.
The study covered 60 research and designing teams which, including the managers
amounted to 367 persons. The study was made on the questionnaire, correlational
basis.
It occurs that it is possible to isolate in the behavior of managers a syndrome
consisting of: conceeding to subordinates the right to autonomous decisions,
being interested in the rights of subordinates, supplying them with information
on the situation of their organization, behaving in an affiliative
Interpersonal way. The declared views on the rights of others to subjectivity
are not directly correlated with the subjective approach to subordinates. Wherever
a manager manifests such approach the workers evaluate the management in
their organization as more participational. The freedom for autonomous decision
and the affiliative style of management increase the level of acceptance of the
organizational aims by the workers.

The paper discusses the results of a research of the workers perception of
their work milieu with regard to its stable features and changes which take
place in it. The research was meant as a basis for the creation of a typology
of adaptability which would enable future large scale diagnostical studies.
A 40-point questionnaire was used in the study (Version A - "What is it like
now?" and version В - "What was it like before?"). It was offered to 100
workers (80 men and 20 women) aged 18-58, and working at the plant from 11 to
20 years. The questionnaire consisted of 4 groups of questions referring to 1.
Changes which, according to the workers, took place in their work milieu, 2.
organizational and physical conditions of work, 3. the social milieu of work,
and 4. the aims and aspirations of workers in view of their work.
A comparison of the results in versions A and В of the questionnaire made
possible the estimation of the degree of perceived changes while the comparison
of groups of perceptively sensitive persons and persons exhibiting various
degrees of adaptation yielded a typology of adaptability.
