Economic reforms started in countries of Central Europe has had neo-liberal character
since first years of transformation. Unemployment and pauperization of remarkable part of
these societies have become the unintended results of transformation. Although the economic
condition of these countries has improved since 1993, poverty has become a constant social
phenomenon. The authors present data illustrating socio-economic situation of Central
European countries in the first stage of transformation. They also discuss J.Szalaya idea of
social structure transformation and social condition of the poor.

Poddubnyj, Vladimir
In order to reconstruct social system one should consider the variety of functions present in
a society. Therefore Ukrainian society could be considered as multistructural and full of
contradictions, especially that its different parts has specific historical roots, generality and stability.
This variety can not be experienced when we use such abstract notions as “policy”, “market”, “civil
society” e.c.t. Instead of destroying the variety of social structure we should base on it when facing the
question how to build a new strategy that could join different social and political powers, how to
accept different ways of society transformation. There are three models of overcoming the social crisis
to be chosen: centra-european, euro-asiatic, socio-national. The new attitude concerning the
dimension of civilized innovation gives the chance to save the variety of socio-political sphere, where
processes of integration and differentiation meet each other. This gives the possibility to understand
historical, political, ethnic, geographic and mental particularity o f Ukrainian nation in the organic
unity with the whole social universe.

The authors discuss objective and subjective factors influencing slowing down of national
economy transformation in Ukraine. They analyze results of researches carried out in 12
enterprises in Donieck region and 251 households.
The researches show that the lowest readiness to accept the changes (considering mental
and psychosocial aspect) are represented by both managers of big enterprises and their
workers. Persons working in big enterprises think that their enterprises have bigger chance
to survive in Ukrainian economy than small and medium private firms. It is a paradox if
one considers economic condition of these big enterprises, promptitude and level of wages,
conditions of work and work safety.

The author discusses the idea of ecological society that is described as sustainable society
or as constant development society or simply as eco-development society.
These three notions are not synonimie. For example, according to deep ecology the notion
of constant development is contradict as it cannot be agreed with the idea of the finite world,
where all the processes of development have natural external limits.
The main part of author’s discussion is devoted to the structure of the survival problem
that is analyzed in the global aspect. This perspective points out ecological and social
conditions of survival concerning the division into postindustrial societies and the third world.
The discussed problems differs in both the cases.
We could observe a sort of argument whether the biggest threat were caused by the
Western World (the north) or undeveloped world (the south)?
Sociologists should be particularly interested in social conditions of survival such as the
world of values and demographic, economic, technical possibilities for developing human desires.
