In 1984 the nests of the White Stork in the area of the former Bełchatów District
(734 km2) and a part of the former Sieradz District (about 720 km2) were investigated.
Comparisons were based on questionnaire data from 1968-1970 and on an inspection
from 1974. 42 (5.72 nests /100 km2) and 35 (4.86 nests/km 2) nests, respectively, occupied
by pairs were recorded. In the whole course of the investigated period the percentage of
nests with no breeding success (HPo) increased exponentially. Changes in the efficiency
of breeding from year to year resulted mainly in changes in the differences in the
percentages of nests having extreme numbers of young birds which had left the nests.
A negative influence of the mine upon the efficiency of breeding of stork nesting within
an area adjoining a strip brown coal mine was proved.

The White Stork bred in the former district of Łask in 1984 at a density of 5.16
pairs/100 km 2. The mean number of nestlings per nest occupied by a pair was 2.10 and
the mean number of nestlings per nest with nestlings was 2.62. 86% of nests were
situated on trees and 95% of them were up to 100 m from buildings. Num ber of nests
occupied by pairs and by pairs with nestlings in 1984 was lower than in 1970 by about
20%.

On the basis of the so far collected and/or published data on the White Stork of
central Poland (the Łódź Upland) the authors undertook an attempt to explain the
spatial and tem poral distribution of breeding efficiency, population density as well as
nests localization and nest distribution in relation to human settlements.
The efficiency of White Stork breeding depends on biotopic conditions and
interspecific competition. Precipitation in spring has a positive while precipitation and
low temperatures in June a negative impact on interspecific competition.
Habitat conditions of the White Stork have begun to display a constant tendency to
decrease in quality, mainly due to land draining.
The interspecific competition depends on biotopic conditions and on density.
Optimal habitat conditions, including weather ones, may largely neutralize the impact
of the intraspecific competition, which enables the population an increase in density,
leading even to the appearance of aggregations and colonies. A deterioration in habitat
conditions increases interspecific competition, which decreases breeding success to
a lower extent than that which could be expected, caused decomposition of aggregations
and decrease in the density of breeding pairs. The appearance of a nest outside of the
settlement area is a result of interspecific competition.

A comparison of studies on the distribution and breeding efficiency of the White
Stork in the Łęczyca District in 1968-1970, 1975 and 1984 is presented. In the analysed
period, there occurred a significant increase in the abundance of nests not occupied by
pairs (HO + HB) and in nests built on the poles of electric traction. The spatial
distribution of stork nests is described. Besides, the author proves the limiting influence
of interspecific com petition on the breeding success of the stork in the distinguished
groupings of nests.
