The film portrays the Silesian community, focusing primarily on the group that considers itself an ethnic minority. It was intended to serve as a platform for expressing identity in a way that helps explain the Silesian sense of distinctness from Polishness, highlights the situation of minorities (peripheral communities) in strongly centralized nation-states, and encourages mutual acceptance and dialogue.
This was supposed to be made easier by prepared questions:
1) Do you feel Silesian? Who taught you how to be Silesian?
2) What are Silesians like? What can people learn from them?
3) Who is a Hanys? What are the most important traits of being a Silesian?
4) What is hajmat? Do you feel a bond with other Silesians?
5) A Pole, a German, a Czech, and a Silesian? Can they get along?
6) How do you envision the future of Silesians? What do you think are the biggest challenges ahead for Silesians?
7) What is the role of young Silesians in the development of Silesian identity? Are young people embracing their Silesian heritage, or are they ashamed of it?
8) Do Silesians feel European? What traits or values do they have in common?
The footage was selected from over 30 participants to present as much content as possible while maintaining integrity. It forms a mosaic of voices, preserving pluralism by capturing a broad cross-section of Silesian society with virtually no intervention in the recorded responses. The title of the film itself, 'Echt', means something real and authentic in the Silesian language.
