Świerkocki, Maciej
Maciej Świerkocki notes that reading was and still is an exclusive and intellectual
activity, an important part of education of a pragmatic society oriented on the acquisition
of information. The author points out that reading is like slow food, as it is
associated with slowness and contemplation, today — with the world of creation
rather than mimetism. He links the postmodernisation of reading with postmodernisation
of literature.

This was the title of a review of the book Konopnicka. Lustra i symptomy (słowo/obraz
terytoria, Gdańsk 2011, p. 575) by Lena Magnore. The book is an abridged and edited
version of her doctoral thesis. Opinions in my review are presented in a form of notes
from reading academic literature. The purpose of Magnore’s book was a discussion
with the homogeneous image of Konopnicka’s life and writings and attempt to make
her image consistent.
In order to achieve this goal, the author used modern methodologies and selected
categories of the contemporary humanities, mostly psychoanalysis and gender
studies. As a result, Konopnicka appears as a woman seen through the prism of
charm and fear of femininity. The book allows to look at Konopnicka’s writing in different and unorthodox manner, provides sensitive documentation of difficult and
painful issues. The use of “psychoanalytical key of interpretation” makes it possible
to see different mechanism of denying femininity, important “wounds of text”, motifs
unknown in traditional writings about maternity, different forms of hysteria.

Roussel, Nelly
The translation of a one-act comedy Pourquoi elles vont á l’église is the first time when
a work by Nelly Roussel is presented in Polish. Nelly Roussel ( 1878–1922) was
a French free-thinker, feminist and anarchist, a representative of the ‘Combat Theater’
movement (théâtre de combat), a precursor of feminist drama the message of
which — introduced in times of Third Republic — will be undertaken by emancipation
movements of the 1960s and the 1970s. The first edition of the play appeared in
Paris without the date of issue on the front page, around 1903. This translation was
based on an issue of Au temps de l’anarchie. Un théâtre de combat.1880-1914. Textes
choisis, établis et présentés par Jonny Ebstein, Philippe Ivernel, Monique Surel-Tupin
et Sylvie Thomas; préface d’Alain Badiou. Biarritz (Pyrénnées-Atlantiques):
Séquier/Archimbaud, 2001. T. 1, p. 359–372. All text annotations by the translator.

The author points out the need to develop reading abilities at the stage of school
education, arguing that literature not only perpetuates the memory of the past and
preserving cultural identity, but also — and perhaps primarily — teaches empathy
and shapes cognitive and language skills necessary for those who wish to influence
others, thus in fact — for everyone. Reading literature is therefore practical, and
should be treated as an integrating subject at schools, rather than a specific type of
study. In learning to read, according to the author, we should see initiation conducive
to spiritual development for the whole future life.
