This paper offers results of comparative analysis of some countries of Central and Eastern
Europe (CEE): Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia which
joined the EU in 2004 and Bulgaria and Romania who joined the EU in 2007 by presenting the
material situations (material deprivation) of older generations using the available statistics from
Eurostat database and microdata of EU-SILC (European Union – Survey of Income and Living
Condition). In evaluation of material situation and so related material deprivation of older households
we will focus only on selected aspects like possessing durable goods. The aim is to compare
situation of various household types (like single 65+ or two adults with at least one 65+) within the
same country and between CEE countries. Analysis showed differences not only within particular
countries but also between countries for the same types of households.

Population aging affects almost all areas of social life. In less than a quarter of a century,
almost every third inhabitant of Poland will be 60 or over 60 years. Needs of society will
change mainly due to the change in population age structure. The increasing need for care will be
impossible to be satisfied only by the family. Greater involvement of informal support networks,
NGOs, religious associations, local government and state will be required to ensure an adequate
standard of care for seniors. The aim of this paper is to analyze the demographic, social and economic
factors affecting the demand for nursing services provided in both the older person's living
environment as well as in specialized institutions and the ability to meet the needs of care by
shrinking and aging labor force. The paper first discusses the factors influencing the increasing
demand for support. The second part discusses the factors affecting the ability to meet care needs.

Proces starzenia się ludności a płodność w Polsce po okresie transformacji
Podogrodzka, Małgorzata
From the 1990s. we note the considerable decrease in the fertility rate in Poland and the
rise in the proportion of persons aged 60 years and more in population. The article is to demonstrate
the dynamics of changes of both processes and to correlation between the two processes. For
the description of the changes in the value of the fertility rate and the share of persons aged over
60 years we use a linear function of the trend, and to describe the relationship of both processes
multiple linear regression.

Zadowolenie z życia osób starszych w Polsce w świetle wyników Diagnozy Społecznej 2011
Abramowska-Kmon, Anita
The main aim of the paper was to analyse the subjective well-being of the elderly in
Poland, as well as its determinants by use of the logistic regression. The data used come from the
2011 wave of the survey “Social Diagnosis – living conditions and quality of life of Poles”. The
analyses have shown that men aged 60 years or more had higher subjective well-being than their
female counterparts. Subjective life satisfaction of the elderly in Poland decreases with age for
women, but for males on the opposite. The elderly in Poland were satisfied the most with the
aspects related to their personal life such as children, marriage, relationship with family member
and relatives, while they were the least satisfied with situation in the country, life prospects, health
status, sexual life, and economical situation of their families. Educational level and health status
(measured in terms of disability) had the greatest impact on the sense of happiness. Generally
people with the highest level of education had more chances to be happy than those less educated.
The probability of happiness among people without disability was higher than among disabled
ones. Married people also had bigger odds to be happy.
