Wilegiatury – moda na dziewiętnastowieczny „urlop”

Abstract

This chapter has been devoted to the issue of fashion for spending summer months in wilegiatura by city inhabitants. Only some summer resorts were recalled which were visited mainly by the inhabitants from two largest cities of the Kingdom of Poland – Warsaw and Łódź. With the rapid process of their urbanization and industrialization and the decrease of city green areas, the inhabitants began to look for summer holiday destinations. Development of new railway lines (normal and narrow gauge), new stations and train stations were favored this process. With time and along with the increase in affluence of city dwellers, new wiligiatura’s were created. They became to be the place to spend a holiday, even longer weekends with a family. In spite of frequent complaints about the conditions of stay and the difficulty with transport, they usually spent two holiday months there and when they returned at home with pleasure they think back to the wilegiatura time. Summer vacations in wilegiatura also became fashionable among the inhabitants of the smaller cities of the Kingdom of Poland at the end of the XIXth century. This problem is worth undertaking extensive source research and preparing a more comprehensive publication.
