Modne sanktuaria. Warmińskie ośrodki pielgrzymkowe w XIX wieku

Abstract

Fashion for pilgrimages in Warmia for centuries has been widely popularized. In this way individuals in their communities could stand out, impress others, and above all, cater to the many spiritual needs. Fashion is usually variable – it is constantly striving to replace the old, traditional forms with new ones. In the case of the Warmian pilgrim, external factors shaped this internal migration largely by instrumentally limiting the functioning of local sanctuaries or changing the means of communication, but the nature of religious pilgrimages remained similar. In Warmia in the nineteenth century we can observe the various degrees of popularity of the phenomenon analyzed, but after the Marian apparitions in Gietrzwald, the pilgrimage movement has been shaped at a very high level. The development of the Gietrzwald sanctuary after 1877 contributed to taking careful steps in other pilgrim centers. In this way, many other smaller Warmongers were increasingly gathering the surrounding pilgrims.
