Mulieres viris suis subditae sint
Kodeks Napoleona i Kodeks Cywilny Królestwa Polskiego potwierdzały męską władzę w małżeństwie. In the 19th century, marriage in the Polish lands was an institution based on religious and social norms that strictly defined gender roles. The man held a dominant position, while the woman was expected to submit to her husband, in accordance with prevailing legal norms. In both civil and canon law, marriage was regarded as the foundation of the family, serving not only as a means of social stabilization but also as a legal framework for legitimizing offspring. The Napoleonic Code and the Civil Code of the Kingdom of Poland affirmed male authority within marriage. Despite formal legal rights, women were restricted in their autonomy, particularly regarding property and decision-making. Examples drawn from contemporary press illustrate the issues faced by marriages of the time, such as disputes over the management of property and difficulties with marital duties. These conflicts were not just private matters but were widely discussed in social and legal contexts.
