The article raises the issue of the quality of life of Polish farmers in the context of ongoing globalization processes. Globalization brings with it new phenomena and processes that reorganize human lives and may be perceived as threats and challenges. Does the increased sense of threats and challenges of globalization worsen the quality of one’s live, defined in subjective terms as mental well-being? The author analyzes the above issue, referring to the results of a study conducted in 2017 on a representative sample of 3,551 family farmers. Mental well-being is analyzed with reference to general life satisfaction, sense of optimism, social support, and internal harmony; in turn, the threats and challenges of globalization are studied in the context of one’s work, finances, cultural life and other spheres. It turns out that an increase of threats and challenges as perceived by farmers was accompanied by enhanced mental well-being. The decisive factors here were the strategies adopted by farmers to control globalization changes: active v passive (avoidance). Assuming that knowledge about globalization threats and challenges is an important way to control them, adaptive activism (related to the disposition of actively obtaining information about new situations) was adopted as an indicator of an active strategy. In turn, recognition of emotional religiosity as an indicator of an avoidance strategy resulted from an assumption that the consequence of the inability to control changes based on a rational factor may be turning to a transcendent factor as providing hope for protection against something new and incomprehensible. Both types of responses could be used by farmers simultaneously, depending on the situation. The article analyses the vision of the devil in the selected tales of the Vie des peres, a collection of pious tales from the thirteenth century, freely inspired by patristic literature and medieval exempla. The period in which the collection was written, the thirteenth century, bridges the gap between the early and late Middle Ages: it is a time when the perception of the devil is changing, and he is becoming increasingly feared. The analysis focuses mainly on four stories in which the devil is at the centre of the story, and in which his very image is a source of fear and a key element of the story: ‘Devil’s Mouth’, ‘Devils Vision’ and two versions of ‘Devil’s Image’. The vision of the devil in these stories coincides with the teratological vision that is dominant in the iconography, to which the stories directly allude. The message of these stories is generally positive: the protagonists almost always manage to overcome their fears and free themselves from the power of the devil. In this way, the authors avoid the trap of Manichaeism: the devil, despite his cunning and sophistication, is in the end only a caricature of an angel, unable to oppose God effectively. The fear of the devil appears several times on the pages of Vie des peres, but it is the message of hope that dominates....

The development of today’s world contributes to the creation of new terms, that is neologisms. The sector which is particularly marked by the emergence of new linguistic units is a fashion industry. It constantly evolves and reflects the tastes and preferences of each of the eras. The continuous development is visible not only in the forms of clothing, but also in the emergence of new terms. This publication will concern primarily the last linguistic borrowings in this sector. Most of the analyzed terms comes from the French fashion magazines. The units have been analyzed in terms of their diffusion in the language (the presence of linguistic borrowings in the dictionaries, the frequency of their use in relation to their French equivalents and their linguistic adaptations) in order to answer the following questions : Which language is the most common source of borrowing ? Which types of borrowing are the most common ? And finally : Is French eager to adopt all borrowings into it’s word system ?...

At first glance, it may seem surprising that Denis Poulot’s book, titled Question sociale. Le Sublime ou le travailleur tel qu’il est en 1870, et ce qu’il peut être (1870), can be taken into consideration for an argot analysis. However, social historians perceive this author’s work as a valuable testimony to the literature on the French working-class life in the 19th century. Against this background, the academic interest in Poulot’s work has so far focused only on the life and working conditions of workers and not on the language of the so-called sublimes. A linguistic study of the sublimes (Hardy 2015) has already shown that it is worth investigating certain concepts, their meanings, and etymologies. Among several domains of everyday life marked by the language taboo we can distinguish the sector of female lingerie which, referring to parts of the human body called shameful, resorts to euphemization to escape the expression of what is embarrassing. The purpose of this article is to analyze how and by what linguistic means this phenomenon is carried out in the denominations of lingerie pieces. The analysis will be done in four languages: French, Italian, English and Polish. We will also take into account the phenomenon of brand names in the mentioned clothing department so that we can observe how the concept of linguistic taboo is achieved through this type of designations.
