The paper presents general features of the climate and bioclimate of Uniejów assessed
from the point of view of the possibility to apply them to climate therapy. The authors have
used multiannual data from meteorological stations located in the vicinity of Uniejów. It
was found that the climate and bioclimate of the city are suitable for climate therapy. The
most useful is the period from the beginning of May to the middle of October when the
majority of patients can practice one of several forms of climate therapy (aerotherapy,
heliotherapy, terrain therapy).

The conditions existing in the Uniejów Basin were favourable to formation of outflow
after successive glaciations due to subsidence in Adamow graben. The last glacial episode
in this area was the Warta stage. During the recession of continental glacier the waters
flew away towards the south, but when the glacier receded to the north, a
valley began to form with an outflow in the northern direction. During the time of the Eemian Interglacial
the valley bottom was fairly wide and it was on the ordinate of 80.0 m. above see level.
In the Vistulian the aggradation tendencies dominated. A high Plenivistulian terrace
formed in the Warta valley (but only in the southern part of the Uniejów Basin) and a
low Late Plenivistulian terrace. On the surface of the vast low terraca there are remains of
multichannel river system which formed in Younger Dryas and were reactivated in the
Holocene. The Warta river-bed was gradually lowering from the begining of Holocene
until the Atlantic period, when this tendency was reversed as a result of intensified human-
generated supply of mineral material into the river-bed. Over the last two centuries the
Warta transformed into a one-channel river in consequence of strong human impact.

When we consider water in the cultural context, it allows us to understand and
appreciate its role and importance in the life of people in the present-day civilisation. It
is the main element of many family and annual rituals. It pervades the material, social
and spiritual aspects of culture with the same intensity in the 21st century as in the past.
Water allows man to move from one space to another and to transgress boundaries without
negative consequences for himself and for the environment in which exists. In the past
our ancestors used water to propitiate Nature, making also use of their bodies for that
purpose, thus creating cultural codes which form cultural sequences connecting the past
with the present. The inscription on kitchen towels „Fresh water will make you healthy”,
no longer known to the youngest generations in the visual form, still remains actual. Each
of us likes fresh water for drinking; we also seek water for its therapeutic properties, and
prefer recreation in places with water reservoirs, both natural and artificial. In this way we
get closer to the Beginning.
