Explaining the genesis to the new retail geography and establishing main research
problems for her is a purpose of this study. For these issues a traditional approach
applied in the retail geography is a background. The following research issues falling
within the scope of the new geography of the trade in western countries were analyzed:
the concentration and the restructuring of the trade in the space, networks of supplying
the trade, areas of commercial ruling out, geography of the international trade, geography
of the virtual trade. Also traditional and new research currents of the Polish retail
geography were discussed.
Conducted analysis allowed for expressing the following conclusions:
1. The new geography of the trade started developing at the beginning of years 90.
20th century. In western countries that was the opposition for dominating earlier
examinations concerning links between the location and the spatial organization of the
trade and spatial behaviors of consumers.
2. In frames of the new retail geography above all for contemporary changes of the
trade in the socioeconomic space were examined.
3. In Anglo-Saxon countries ranks among crucial research problems of the new retail
geography: the concentration and the restructuring of the trade in the space, networks of
retail sourcing, areas of retail exclusion, geography of the international trade and
geography of the virtual trade.
4. A systemic transformation in Poland contributed to the development the new retail
geography. At first peculiarly in this field research works concentrating on dynamic
structural transformations of the retail on the area of the country in different spatial
scales played the greater role. In the more late time the greater stress was put for
functioning of shopping centers in the urban space.

Rykała, Andrzej
W artykule dokonano analizy organizowania w przestrzeni Łodzi żydowskich
modlitewni. Próbę tę podjęto w kontekście rozmieszczenia przestrzennego ludności
żydowskiej, warunkowanego istnieniem specjalnego rewiru (1827–1862), poza którego
granicami ludność ta nie miała na ogół prawa się osiedlać. W odniesieniu do współ-
czesności określono również funkcje obiektów będących dawnymi domami modlitwy
lub miejsc po nich, w przypadku gdy obiekty te nie zachowały się w krajobrazie
kulturowym miasta.; Jews for the purpose of prayer and religious congregations not only erected
a synagogue, but also "private" prayer houses. They weren’t, comparing to the previous
one, as impressive in architectonic shape. They were smaller in size, had poorer interior
and were usually arranged in private houses and tenement houses, occasionally in
factorial buildings (e.g. in Łódź). In Łódź over 250 small Jewish prayer houses were
erected. Directed by first of all religious nature motivations, Jewish people erected these
buildings also for certain social purposes. They were supposed to be the place of
integration of different environments: neighbourhood, professional. The prayer houses
played a big role especially in the religious life of the Hasidim, the followers of specific
Zadiks. The continuous increase of the number of cult buildings was also the result of
enormous inner differentiation of local Jewish community, among the others the marking
disproportions in material status of their representatives, political differences (increasing
influence of Zionism) and most of all the increasing differences, or even religious
conflicts (first between Hasidism and traditional rabbinic trend, and latter of both
mentioned before with reformed Judaism).

Mularska-Kucharek, Monika
Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest zbadanie poziomu kapitału społecznego mieszkańców
Łodzi, a także przestrzenne ujęcie badanego zjawiska. Podstawę empiryczną
analiz stanowią reprezentatywne badania ilościowe przeprowadzone w 2010 r. na próbie
blisko 500 mieszkańców Łodzi.
Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że łodzianie posiadają niewielkie zasoby kapitału
społecznego. Badane zjawisko jest natomiast silnie zróżnicowane przestrzennie.
W przestrzeni miasta można wyróżnić obszary o wysokim i niskim poziomie kapitału
społecznego oraz jego komponentów.; Different reference resources emphasize that social capital, unlike human capital
should not be conceived as an attribute of individual citizens but asa cultural
phenomenon which is a public good built in the long-time perspective (Czapiński 2006).
Social capital can also be understood as the reserves at a disposal of an individual which
allow them to get certain benefits in personal and professional life. Social capital is therefore one of many factors determining the development of cities and the intensity
and pace of changes occurring within them.
The aim of the foregoing article is to examine the level of social capital of Łódź
residents and to inspect the spatial approach to the phenomenon under investigation. The
empirical basis of the analyses was the representative quantitative research conducted in
2010 on a sample of about 500 residents of Łódź, where as an indicator of the ecological
variable used in the study in volved districts divided into housing estates units.
The study illustrates that residents of Łódź show a low level of social capital
represented by low levels of all three of its components: trust, norms and networks.
The spatial analysis performed revealed a great diversity of Łódź in terms of social
capital. There are areas of the city which can be recognized as showing high and low
levels of social capital and its components. This is of course reflected in various aspects
of social life, including the standard and quality of life of residents living in particular
areas. Studies have shown that people representing individual residential areas with the
highest level of social capital have a better standard of living and take a greater
satisfaction in life than those from the areas where the levels of the studied phenomenon
reached the lowest limits.
