This study presents the effect of UV on the physicochemical changes of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) with a size of 44 nm after 2, 4, and 8 h of illumination, along with its impact on white blood cells. It was found that UV illumination reduced the diameter
of PS-NPs to 10.2 ± 0.4% and increased the zeta potential to 36 ± 3% after 8 h of illumination. Microscopy (SEM and AFM) measurements showed considerable changes in the shape and behaviour of PS-NPs, indicating reduced size and a high tendency to agglomerate when deposited on the substrate surface. Moreover, UV-Vis spectroscopy showed an increase in the intensity of the n-π* band, signifying oxidation of the nanomaterial. The chemical modifications significantly influenced the biological properties of the nanoparticles, altering the morphology of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as indicated by changes in forward scatter (FSC) and side scatter (SSC) parameters. Additionally, there were modifications in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, which, in turn, affected cell viability. Prolonged UV exposure of nanoparticles can also lead to increase in the levels of intracellular chelatable iron ions (Fe²⁺), thereby indicating the induction of cell death associated with ferroptosis. The most pronounced alterations in these parameters were observed after incubating PBMCs with nanoparticles exposed to UV for 8 hours.
Results from this study clearly demonstrate that the tested nanoplastic undergoes physicochemical changes upon exposure to UV, and that these induced changes strongly affect human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Ocena właściwości tribologicznych i możliwości zastosowania nanocząstek metalicznych i tlenkowych w innowacyjnych produktach chłodząco-smarujących, wykorzystywanych w procesie obróbki metali
Stanek, Wiktor
Praca obejmowała dobór odpowiednich nanomateriałów i cieczy bazowych umożliwiających uzyskanie stabilnych nanopłynów przeznaczonych do zastosowań obróbkowych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono ocenie przeciwzużyciowych i przeciwciernych właściwości opracowanych układów tribologicznych.
Badania eksperymentalne przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem testerów tribologicznych w skali mikro i makro, a także podczas procesów toczenia wzdłużnego realizowanych z użyciem opracowanych układów CCS.
Opracowane nanopłyny mogą znaleźć zastosowanie zarówno na obrabiarkach konwencjonalnych, jak i sterowanych numerycznie CNC podczas obróbki stali.; Contemporary trends in machining focus on developing technologies that ensure high process efficiency while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and human health. One promising approach is the modification of cutting fluids by incorporating nanomaterials that enhance their tribological properties. The aim of this dissertation was to develop and evaluate nanoparticle-containing cutting fluid systems and determine their influence on friction and wear during machining operations.
The research involved the selection of suitable nanomaterials and base fluids to obtain stable nanofluids for machining applications. Particular attention was paid to the anti-wear and anti-friction performance of the developed tribological systems. The dissertation consists of four main parts: a review of the current state of knowledge, the definition of the research objective and scope, a description of the experimental methodology, and the presentation and discussion of the obtained results.
Experimental investigations were conducted using tribological testers operating at micro- and macro-scales, as well as during longitudinal turning processes performed with the developed cutting fluid systems. Following the tests, the worn and machined surfaces were analyzed using microscopy techniques and surface profilometry.
The results demonstrated that cutting fluids enriched with nanomaterials exhibit better performance than conventional cooling and lubricating fluids. The most favorable results were obtained for systems containing Bi₂S₃ nanostructures, which effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and wear intensity. This improvement was attributed to the formation of a protective anti-wear tribofilm containing bismuth and sulfur compounds. The developed nanofluids can be successfully applied in conventional and CNC machine tools, particularly in steel machining operations, where enhanced lubrication and cooling are required.

Odkrywaj. Inspiruj. Twórz przyszłość. XVII Sesja Magistrantów i Doktorantów Łódzkiego Środowiska Chemików: Książka abstraktów
Skowron-Jaskólska, Monika
W 2026 roku organizacja XVII Sesji Magistrantów i Doktorantów Łódzkiego Środowiska Chemików przypada Wydziałowi Chemii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego.
