Festiwal Dialogu Czterech Kultur jako przykład strategicznego produktu turystycznego dla Łodzi
Cudny, Waldemar
Stasiak, Andrzej
This paper discusses the impact of cultural events on formation of tourist product of the city of Łódź. Literature-based analysis of the notion of ‘tourist product’ is followed by an outline of the post-1989 economic transformation in Łódź and its implications for cultural institutions in the city. In further section of the paper the author presents the origin and history of the Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures – the most important festival held in the city since 2002.
The analysis showed that after 1989 the cultural life in Łódź had experiences a certain decline. After a few years, however, many new initiatives in the sphere of culture and entertainment have been launched, including various festivals. The Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures rose to the rank of most important event in Łódź. It aims at promoting dialogue among different nationalities, in particular Poles, Jews, Germans and Russians – the nations that made up the pre-war city of Łódź and which became strongly antagonistic in the aftermath of WW II.
The Festival consists of many various artistic events: concerts, exhibitions, theater and ballet performances, circus shows, etc. addressed to a public of very diversified needs and tastes. For some events an admission fees is charged, some others are free of charge thus being available for not well off people.
Despite some technical and financial troubles the Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures became a mark tourist product of Łódź attracting large audience (100,000 spectators attended the 1st festival) including foreigners from, among others, Germany, Israel and Russia. The festival won the title of the Tourist Product of the Year awarded by the Polish Tourist Organization. Considering the involvement of the festival in challenging negative stereotypes, anti-Semitism and xenophobia, the festival fulfils a vital social function. Furthermore, it is an event of considerable economic importance. Actually, such large-scale cultural events support the promotion of the city of Łódź on the tourist market.

Propozycje narzędzi wykorzystywanych w edukacji regionalnej

Propozycje narzędzi wykorzystywanych w edukacji regionalnej
Mokras-Grabowska, Justyna
Stasiak, Andrzej
This paper presents propositions of tools used in regional education. It discusses the essence of regional education and its main objectives: dissemination of knowledge on the region, direct experience of regional environment, enhancing regional identity, stimulation of interest in the surrounding areas. The principle of regional education is a shift in the educational process toward learning about students’ environment. It tends to enrich the curricula with new, often non-typical pieces of knowledge that familiarize students with their region’s cultural heritage. From among many new ideas introduced into regional education, the most interesting are those which employ new methods within the so-called interdisciplinary educational path.
Educational tools discussed in this paper concern the so-called educational projects which represent a method that lets students acquire a variety of new skills: using various sources of information, taking responsibility, assessing, organizing work, presenting work results, etc. Many projects have to do with sightseeing tourism understood as gathering and popularizing regional knowledge through, among others, organizing excursions. Among a number of projects proposed in the paper the most interesting are: creating a chronicle, lexicon or website about students locality, excursion co-organized by students, analysis of different types of landscape, making schemes of tourist trails or arranging a regional mini-museum at school.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding are among the most popular winter sports. Skiers and snowboarders usually use the same tourism infrastructure, which often results in treating them as one homogenous group. This paper discusses some significant differences in motivations behind taking up the two winter sport disciplines. The analysis is based on an empirical research using the Canadian market survey as a model. It was found that main reasons for choosing downhill skiing include easy usage of ski lifts and high speed riding whereas the snowboarders appreciate the ease of off-piste riding and possibility to perform aerial tricks. Some results are in contradiction to common stereotypes e.g. social relationships influenced stronger choosing skiing than snowboarding, which may suggest necessity of further research conducted on a larger sample.

TQM (Total Quality Management) represents a world-wide acknowledged method of management. Its principles can be found both in ISO 9001 standards and the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management).
This paper is focused on the application of this method in the service sector, exemplified by the tourism industry. Special attention has been given to specificity of tourist product and problems related to defining quality (in technical and, first of all, functional terms) in this particular segment of the economy.
In the conclusion the author pointed out some pro-quality actions that must be undertaken in order to avoid improvisation and chaos in tourist enterprises. This is meant to increase customer satisfaction leading to loyalty of a con-siderable group of customers.
