Abstract

Since the foundation of Łódź University Library the cataloguing of monographs, i.e. nonserial publications, has been a two-stage process. Alphabetical cataloguing has been conducted in accordance with strict cataloguing rules and successively introduced standards. Subject indexing has been carried out by reference to the detailed subject catalogue in order to maintain uniformity and consistency of headings used and created. This was made possible by the use of a paper dictionary of subject headings, presenting the catalogue state in the form of headlines, and by the use of indexes of personal and geographical names. The integrated library system HORIZON, which has been implemented at Łódź University Library, as well as the automated online catalogue offer many new possibilities. Currently the MARC 21 format is applied to monograph cataloguing, and data are stored and presented in the form of subject headings authority files. The advanced information retrieval language KABA is presently used for subject indexing.
