| dc.description.abstract | The present study aims to demonstrate how the concept of mind, defined as a complex
cognitive system, is metaphorically reified in linguistic representations in English and Polish.
This issue is approached using the framework of cognitive corpus-based linguistics (Heylen,
Tummers & Geeraerts, 2008; Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, 2012; Fabiszak & Konat, 2013)
which combines a corpus linguistic methodology, in particular corpus-illustrated approach,
with theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics (Croft & Cruse, 2004; Janda, 2015). By
adopting Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, 1999) together with its
recent elaboration, i.e. Theory of Objectification (Szwedek, 2011, 2014), the study aims to
reveal on the basis of language data from the British National Corpus and the National Corpus
of Polish how the process of metaphorical reification (objectification), i.e. metaphorically
understanding abstract objects in terms of concrete, physical objects which are ultimately
experienced through the sense of touch, gives rise to parallel conceptualizations of mind and
other mental phenomena such as thought, paying attention, and problem solving. | pl_PL |
