Muzułmanie w Słowenii (zarys tematyczny)

Abstract

The presence of Islam in Slovenia can be divided into several stages. The first one can be traced back to the 16th century and the Ottoman raids on the territory inhabited back then by Slovenians. These events led to a strong (mostly negative) impression in the historical consciousness of Slovenians, which in turn left its mark on other manifestations of social and cultural life, especially in literature and history, as well as in the way Islam and Muslims are treated currently. The second period took place during the reign of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when the Muslims originating from Bosnia found themselves at the center of the cultural life of the monarchy, common also for the Slovenes. The third stage is the Yugoslav period, which lasted from 1918 to 1991 when Slovenia regained its independence. The fourth period is related to recent history, i.e. the civil war raging in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the years 1992–1995, as well as the Middle East conflict, which caused a mass emigration of the Muslim population from areas affected by the war. All these periods of presence of Muslims in Slovenia are discussed and analyzed in the paper.
