Abstract

The language of the past century boasted innumerable patriotic clichés and revolutionary invocations, political slogans, propaganda terms and banner slogans, such as: Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь! (Marks and Engels); Призрак бродит по Европе, призрак коммунизма (Marks and Engels); or Лучше меньше, да лучше (Lenin). For propaganda reasons, prevalent was the militarisation of slogans, cf.: Социалистическое отечество в опасности!; Всё для фронта! Many slogans, constructed according to the political agenda, referred to civic responsibility and patriotic obligations, such as:.: Родина-мать зовет! (from a poster); Учиться, учиться и [ешё раз] учиться (Lenin). Distinctive elements of language at the time were phrases related both to the ideology and the communist system and to social and political changes. Salient in this respect is Stalinian rhetoric, cf..: Кадры решают все; Жить стало лучше, товарищи, жить стало веселей. Among propaganda slogans one can also find many of an economic and social nature, such as: Экономика должна быть экономной; Долой кухонное рабство!; Отходы – в доходы! After the political transformation inspired by pierestroika in 1985, numerous propaganda slogans took on ironic character, such as: Все для человека; Развитой (реальный) социализм; Новый человек. In the new historical and mental context, one can observe a critical attitude towards the past century, which is epitomised by a metaphoric term Светлое будущее in reference to the Soviet reality.
