Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) – polski padewczyk

Abstract

Artykuł przybliża postać Jana Zamoyskiego, marszałka wielkiego koronnego, oraz ukazuje, jak pobyt we Włoszech, a zwłaszcza studia na uniwersytecie padewskim wpłynęły na formację intelektualną szlachcica. Artykuł przypomina, dlaczego uczelnia padewska cieszyła się tak wielkim prestiżem wśród tłumnie przybywających tu Polaków, którzy do końca życia określali się mianem „padewczyków”. W tekście pokazano, jak kultura włoska zainspirowała Zamoyskiego przy do stworzenia miasta Zamość, określanym „Padwą północy”. Podjęto również zagadnienie mecenatu, jakim Zamoyski obejmował najważniejszych twórców renesansu polskiego.

The article presents the figure of Jan Zamoyski, Grand Crown Marshal, and examines how his stay in Italy—particularly his studies at the University of Padua—shaped his intellectual formation as a member of the Polish nobility. It discusses why the University of Padua enjoyed such prestige among the many Poles who studied there and who continued to identify themselves as Padovans throughout their lives. The text also illustrates how Italian culture inspired Zamoyski in the creation of the city of Zamość, often referred to as the “Padua of the North.” Finally, the study addresses Zamoyski’s patronage of key figures of the Polish Renaissance.
