The dataset contains material on the functioning of the Latin alphabet in Kazakhstan, with particular emphasis on examples of its use in the public space of Almaty. The analysis employs a comparative analysis of graphic systems and a linguistic landscape approach. The individual versions of the alphabet are compared chronologically, taking into account their structure, the characters used, and grapheme–phoneme correspondences. The dataset includes fieldwork material collected in Almaty, focusing on the use of different alphabet variants in signs and displays of small businesses. The dataset comprises raw data collected through field research on the linguistic landscape of Almaty. It contains a selection of significant photographic examples documenting the stages and practical manifestations of the transition of Kazakh from Cyrillic to Latin script, including different alphabet variants used in the city’s public space. The material was collected using a complete (exhaustive) sampling method.
