Terminology and phraseology in research papers in the domains of new technologies. A cognitive comparative corpus-based English-Polish perspective
Streszczenie
This doctoral dissertation presents the analysis of terminology and phraseology in research papers in technical and empirical domains of new technologies, i.e. microelectronics, telecommunication and computer science. The scrutiny is conducted on comparable corpora of 365 research articles in English and Polish, using corpus linguistic tools and methodologies. The input data for the corpora consists of carefully selected research papers published online between 2007 and 2014 in English and Polish. The analyses were conducted using Sketch Engine, due to its unique features of extracting keyword terminology and most recurring phraseological units along with a wide array of typologies of terminological aspects. The main aim of the study is to verify whether there are differences in conceptualization in terminology creation in English and Polish as well as to delimit characteristic features of English and Polish terms in technical domains of new technologies. Moreover, the scrutiny of phraseology has been performed to compare how scientists communicate the results of their research and convince the target audience about the validity of proposed solutions in English and Polish. In addition, the most recurring collocations have been studied to verify their terminological status. The study also entails the analysis of the macrostructure, i.e. the format of the research paper and its multimodal content as complementary means of communicating science in the analysed empirical domains. Finally, the dissertation contains the scrutiny of the authorial presence in research papers to show persuasion methods in purportedly objective and impersonal scientific writing.
