Abstract

Reading scholia to ancient dramas, we have to notice their variety in terms of themes’ scope and plethora of stage directions. Scholiasts were reading dramas neatly and commenting them in the context of dramaturgy belonging to individual playwright, making observations on language or on particular scenes. Commentaries of scholiasts allow us to enrich our knowledge about ancient dramas and to become more familiar with dramaturgical workshop developed by tragic and comic poets of 5th century B.C. This paper will focus mainly on the scholia to Greek tragedies with special emphasis put on the Scholia vetera in Euripidem that comment particular fragments of Orestes, Andromache, The Trojan Women and Phoenician Women. In this analysis we will be able to describe such issues as relationships between the poet and an audience, main features of his works, structure of drama, comparative questions, and customary.
