Il y aura à boire ? Les boissons dans le langage d’Aristide Bruant

Abstract

In this paper, I will analyse slang terms related to different types of drinks in the lyrics of songs and in the French-argot dictionary (with Léon Drouin de Bercy) by famous French singer, writer, and cabaret owner Aristide Bruant (1851-1925). Although their dictionary can be criticised from the point of view of today’s lexicography, its undeniable advantages – such as the number of slang equivalents, the abundance of quotes, etc. – make it an important dictionary of its time. Bruant’s work, including his songs, can be considered as a corpus particularly appealing to linguists interested in the 19th-century Paris slang. According to my hypothesis, this vocabulary can be divided into two groups, namely slang terms for different types of drinks as well as words with various meanings created with the help of semantic processes based on the imagery of drinking.

Dans ce travail, nous présenterons la terminologie relative aux boissons dans le langage du chansonnier, écrivain et lexicographe Aristide Bruant (1851-1925) telle qu’on la trouve dans son dictionnaire L’Argot au XXe siècle (1901, avec Léon Drouin de Bercy) et dans les paroles de ses chansons qui constituent un document particulièrement précieux pour ceux intéressés par le français argotique et populaire au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles. Le dictionnaire de Bruant et de Bercy peut être critiqué à juste titre du point de vue de la lexicographie de notre époque, mais ses points forts indéniables en font un dictionnaire particulièrement important pour son époque, sans oublier qu’avec les textes des chansons il constitue un corpus d’argot ancien d’une valeur inestimable. Selon notre hypothèse, ce lexique comprend, d’une part, les noms argotiques et populaires des différentes boissons et, d’autre part, des éléments lexicaux ayant diverses significations dont on doit la formation – par des procédés sémantiques – à l’imagerie alimentaire relative à la notion de boire.
