Abstract

Redefinition of masculinity. Cultural and social contects of men’s ageing Nowadays the concept of gender is analysed more often and wider. Studies on gender touch upon various aspects which previously were neglected or trifled. Gender is decoded in relation to as well as through many relations and phenomena including ageing. The article presents main problems of men’s ageing. The author made an attempt to understand how we define masculinity nowdays. For that purpose the category of masculinity, binarism of gender and male domination were studied. Moreover, the author tries to answer the important questions concerning moulding and redefining masculinity of old men. This analysis shows the social exclusion of men in later life – men become ”invisible” in various ways. The author made an attempt to show the contemporary construct of an elderly man. For that purpose the author describes some specific problems of elderly people such as health problems, older male as carer and late-life widowhood, ect. All of this aspects show the necessity of redefining the category of masculinity of elderly men.
