Pośmiertna sława pomorskiej czarownicy Sydonii von Borcke i recepcja jej postaci w XIX–XXI wieku

Abstract

The first part of the article outlines the life of Sydonia von Borcke and course of the witchcraft trial against her. Then the author discusses her reception in the 19th and 20th centuries, making her the most famous Pomeranian ‘witch’. At the beginning of the 21st century Sydonia von Borcke experienced a renaissance of popularity in Poland as she became a symbol of the witch hunt in Pomerania. Regrettably, her unhappy life has been subject to commercialisation and her figure tends to be used to advertise (as it seems, sometimes unreflectively) some institutions and cultural events.

W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawione zostało w skrócie życie i przebieg procesu o czary wytoczonego Sydonii von Borcke. Następnie autor omówił recepcję jej postaci w XIX i XX w., dzięki czemu stała się ona najbardziej żywa w Polsce renesans popularności, stała się bowiem symbolem polowania na czarownice na Pomorzu. Nastąpiła, niestety, komercjalizacja jej nieszczęśliwego życia, a jej postać służy do reklamy (jak się wydaje, czasami bezrefleksyjnej) niektórych instytucji i wydarzeń kulturalnych.
