The subject of the considerations undertaken in this work is a picturebook by Iwona Chmielewska, understood as an authentic work of art addressed to a potential audience - a child. Among other cultural texts, the picturebook is distinguished by the special relationship of the visual and verbal layers, which synergistically build the narrative of the book. Illustrations in picturebooks can be regarded as an artistic message directed to the child. Exposure to a picturebook by I. Chmielewska determines the stage of encounter with an authentic work of art that possesses features characteristic of modern art. Being the purpose of the thesis: the characterization of the picturebook by Iwona Chmielewska as a work of art in the context of aesthetic education of the child refers to the axiological-pedagogical approach to art. It is part of the current of research on art for children. The problems of the research included considerations around the key research question: What artistic and educational values are contained in the author's picturebook by Iwona Chmielewska? The research procedure is based on the methodology of visual research in the qualitative paradigm. The research strategy included two methods: compositional interpretation (G. Rose) and reflective thematic analysis (V. Braun and V. Clarke). The assumed synergy of methods made it possible to interpret the images in Chmielewska's books in a way that combined the terminology of art with a reflective approach close to pedagogical science. As a result of the analysis process, six themes were developed to characterize the object of study: sensuality, emotionality, poeticity, intervisuality, relativity, and attributes of everyday life. Characterization of the picturebook by I. Chmielewska based on the formulated themes shows its potential as a source of aesthetic education for the child.
