Józef Chociszewski jako „producent teatralny”

Abstract

Józef Chociszewski is usually associated with the publications addressed to the general public, including journals and short stories. However, this “most diligent from among Greater Poland citizens”, as he used to be called, could also boast of quite a number of dramatic works. Unfortunately, this context has been often disregarded, most probably as it was related to some difficult questions, e.g. referring to genology, or to attempts at evaluation of his works of this kind. Although in his dramatic works he resigned from the pursuit of originality and repeated the traditional well-accepted patterns, although his works were far from excellence and showed intrusive tendencies, stereotypes, used exploited theatrical effects and motifs, they were issued and presented on stage many times. Their undeniable advantage was the fact that they responded to the very needs of amateurish theatres from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Józef Chociszewski kojarzony jest zazwyczaj z wydawnictwami dla ludu, czasopismami i powiastkami. „Najpracowitszy Wielkopolanin” – jak zazwyczaj go nazywano – mógł też pochwalić się sporym dorobkiem dramatycznym. Tę część twórczości autora badacze zazwyczaj pomijają. Może się to wiązać z niełatwymi do wyjaśnienia problemami (dotyczącymi choćby kwestii genologicznych) czy z próbą oceny tego typu literatury. Choć w dramatach autor rezygnował z pogoni za oryginalnością i powielał modele o już utrwalonej tradycji, którym nadto brakowało kunsztu (raziły natrętną tendencją, stereotypami, szafowały wyeksploatowanymi efektami i motywami teatralnymi), to doczekały się one licznych wydań i wystawień. Ich niewątpliwą zaletą było to, że stanowiły odpowiedź na autentyczne potrzeby scen amatorskich przełomu XIX i XX wieku.
