O miejscu poezji w antologii Explorations in Freedom pod redakcją Leopolda Tyrmanda (1970)

Abstract

This article presents findings related to the anthology Explorations in Freedom: Prose, Narrative, and Poetry from ‘Kultura’, edited by Leopold Tyrmand in 1970, published by The Free Press in collaboration with The State University of New York at Albany and the London-based publisher Collier Macmillan Limited. Drawing on unpublished correspondence between the writer and Jerzy Giedroyc (held in the archives of the Instytut Literacki [The Literary Institute] in Le Mesnil-le-Roi, France), the author discusses the background of this publication’s creation. The focus is placed on the poetic works included in the anthology, authored by Kazimierz Wierzyński, Wacław Iwaniuk, Józef Łobodowski, Czesław Miłosz, Josif Brodsky, Adam Czerniawski, and Bogdan Czaykowski. The paper addresses the origins of the idea to include poetry in the projected volume, the selection of authors and translators, as well as the choice of poems. These findings illustrate the development of the relationship and collaboration between Tyrmand and Giedroyc – from their initial enthusiasm to the eventual rupture of their professional ties.

W artykule zostały zaprezentowane ustalenia dotyczące zawartości antologii Explorations in Freedom. Prose, Narrative, and Poetry from ‘Kultura’ pod redakcją Leopolda Tyrmanda, wydanej w 1970 roku przez The Free Press we współpracy z The State University of New York at Albany oraz londyńską oficyną Collier Macmillan Limited. Opierając się na niewydanej korespondencji pisarza i Jerzego Giedroycia (w zasobach archiwum Instytutu Literackiego w Le Mesnil-le-Roi), autor omówił kulisy powstawania tej publikacji. Skupił się przy tym na zamieszczonych w antologii utworach poetyckich autorstwa: Kazimierza Wierzyńskiego, Wacława Iwaniuka, Józefa Łobodowskiego, Czesława Miłosza, Josifa Brodskiego, Adama Czerniawskiego oraz Bogdana Czaykowskiego. W pracy omówiono genezę pomysłu włączenia poezji do projektowanego tomu, a także dobór autorów i tłumaczy oraz wybór wierszy. Ustalenia te ilustrują, jak rozwijała się relacja i współpraca Tyrmanda i Giedroycia – od ich początkowego entuzjazmu do zerwania stosunków.
