Abstract

The profession of the nurse is undergoing fundamental changes i.e. from an auxiliary profession it changes into a profession being equal to that of the medicine doctor; there is consolidating its co-ordinating role among medical professions, scientific foundations of nursing are being expended, and the Influence exerted by the academic environment of nurses on the present-day model of the nurse is growing. The demand for highly specialized nursing personnel is continuously growing along with bigger requirements posed for candidates for nurses. There is growing the importance of recruitment problem and especially the problem of shaping motives of choosing the Job which will in future determine fuller identification with the performed profession. Speaking about motives of selecting the nurse professions the nurses usually stress "their own interest". However equally important seems to be motive number two and namely “some indefinite coincidence" and "difficulties in getting to a new school”. We find that there exists a strict correlation between the latter circumstances connected with selection of the profession and later dissatisfaction or desire to abandon the Job. Despite the already mentioned changes in situation of the profession there prevails an opinion among nurses that this type of profession would not be attractive for their daughters even though they consider it to be a typically female profession unsuitable for men. They would rather prefer their daughters to choose other professions requiring academic background (teacher, doctor) while their sons - to perform technical professions traditionally considered as most suitable for men.
