Pompa funebris Augusta w oczach Kasjusza Diona
Abstract
A solemn funeral became the condition for an emperor’s glorification after Augustus. Most information on pompa funebris of the first princeps exists due to Cassius Dio. The funeral of Augustus was closely related to republican traditions. New elements were also present in it, mainly characteristic of the ideology of the early empire. Some of them were included in the mandata de funere of Augustus. It should be suspected that the Tiberius’ funeral speech, included in a chapter of Cassius Dio, is based on laudatio funebris which was factually delivered. The situation illustrating an eagle taking Augustus’ soul to heaven is different. This delivery was surely based on a later tradition than Augustus’ funeral.
